David J Holmes has been a sculptor
of many media since 1960, with many wood sculptures commissioned
before working in stone.
Some of the more important commissions, include the John F.
Kennedy memorial park entrance sign in Hyannis, Mass; an 8'
inch carved wooden eagle at the New Hampshire state house in
Concord, N.H.; the Maine State Coat of Arms (Seal) in the Governor's
office in Augusta, Maine, with a carved relief carving of a
pineapple over the entrance door (1972); all but one of the
signage at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono, Maine; a
life sized wood carved, mermaid and dolphin sculpture for the
Jameson Elementary school in Old Orchard Beach, Maine; a 10'
square carved mural collage for the Mercer Elementary School
in Mercer, Maine, with many more for businesses and personal
applications in Canada, the U.S., Europe and New Zealand.
Building on natural artistic ability, he educated himself
through research of the different media, and learned by doing,
as his sole profession. In 1974, his making of a Maine sign,
from conception to the hanging, was documented in a nationally
released film, titled "Seasons by a Craftsman"
More recently, stone has become the primary medium after
working with a stone restoration firm in England, and a gallery
showing his works at Wimbledon, carved while there. (1989)
Since 1991, when he was invited to represent Plymouth, Maine,
he has been traveling to the sister city of New Plymouth,
New Zealand, to participate with stone sculptors from around
the world at symposiums.
