| James R Pyne |
James "Riv" Pyne was born in Pennsylvania, educated in Massachusetts and Tennessee and received his degree at the University of Pennsylvania. A former English teacher, he moved to Maine permanently in 1982 to write, raise sheep and sculpt. He now lives on a saltwater farm in Waldoboro.
A self-taught artist, Riv began working with driftwood then moved to other media such as plaster, epoxies, casting stone and bronze. Many of his composite pieces consist of armatures made of steel and wood overlaid with layers of epoxy filler. Bits and pieces of wood splinters and chips resembling wings and feathers are incorporated in the epoxy; then the whole is painted with acrylics. Some sculptures are available in limited-edition bronzes.
Pyne's stylized, figurative animal pieces are more an attempt to capture a remembered moment than a present one. He tries to recreate the intensity of an unexpected first sighting recollected over time, with all the distortions that time imparts to memory. The work also bears a certain resemblance to illustrations of exotic animals done in the 18th and 19th centuries by artists who never actually laid eyes on these animals but worked instead from written descriptions and anecdotes. The end results are often childlike and humorous.
