Joel Urruty

In my work I distort and manipulate the figure, shedding what I find unnecessary, thus creating simple, primitive forms rich in ambiguity and mood. I create my work by exploring new and old ideas, stemming from my imagination and curiosity. In return, my hopes are that the pieces engage the viewer's own imagination, bringing forth their own thoughts and interpretations.

In the "Lady series", my goal is to simplify and get to the true essence of the subject. With the use of line and form I intend to bring out the quiet grace and elegance found in the human form. The process of carving unveils the hidden figure hidden inside. The sculpture slowly takes life with each pass of the tool. When the piece has managed to evoke emotion I am satisfied and begin the finishing process.

The sculptures are treated with various patterns carved onto the surface of the wood. This decorative treatment, a form of ornamentation, adds a unique and distinctive personality to each of the sculptures.
